The campaign was formed in 2015 to fight for the complete renovation of the Avery Hill Winter Garden. It followed a decision by the University of Greenwich to sell the Mansion site and abandon its bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund. It has been supported by a 3,800-name petition and local amenity groups, including the Friends of Avery Hill Park, the Eltham Society, local residents and councillors. We have no political affiliation and work across all parties.
It was successful, in 2017, in persuading the council to agree that this unique and listed heritage asset must be protected and restored, with a revival of the bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund forming part of any redevelopment’. The campaign would like to see the restoration and future community use of the listed parts of the Mansion site, including its magnificent ballroom, gallery and entrance. Also, the preservation of wider the Avery Hill estate and park by applying for conservation area status and protecting the trees. Our aim is to celebrate the unique Victorian legacy of Mansion’s owner Col John North, giving it a vibrant future for the use of the community. We, therefore, have concerns over plans for a 1,150 student Harris Academy secondary school for boys with sixth form on the site, which would be built after the University moves out in summer 2020.
In particular the campaign would seek assurances that:
the heritage assets are safeguarded, placed in a Trust and made available as a community resource;
access to the park is unaffected at all times;
‘school-run’ traffic is managed to have no detriment to park and Winter Garden visitors;
the Winter Garden is fully renovated;
any new build is appropriate and has no negative impact on the listed assets;
the boundary treatment of the new school has no negative impact on open Mansion appearance of the wider Avery Hill estate.
